Routes from Litochoro

Litochoro - Vythos - Golna - Pr. Ilias - Litochoro

The route starts from the central square of Litochoro and heads towards Lakko. During the route, the road leads us to a metal footbridge that crosses the Enipeas river, after which we continue towards Mylos and the Enipeas gorge. From there, we head to the chapel of the Holy Apostles. Then, we follow the path that leads to the asphalt road to Agios Ioannis. At the intersection with this road, there is a kiosk that marks the beginning of the path to Golna, which we follow. After reaching the top of Golna, we return by the same path. Then, after passing the kiosk, we turn left onto the dirt road towards Prophet Ilias. In the middle of the gravel road, we turn onto the path that leads to Litochoros, ending up at the parking lot of the chapel of Prophet Ilias. After visiting the chapel, we return to the dirt road and follow the path to Litochoro.

Litochoro - Gkolna - Litochoro

Our hiking route starts from the central square of Agios Nikolaos. We follow Enipeos street and then Kosmas Doubiotis street towards the entrance of the Enipeos gorge, in the Myloi forest site. From there, we continue on the path to the first viewpoint, where we leave the canyon path for a smaller path to the chapel of Prophet Elias. From there, we follow the path to Golna, passing the kiosk below Golna Peak and turning right. We reach the junction with the path to Golna Peak, where we turn left and soon reach Golna Peak. From there, we return to the kiosk and then follow the path to Agios Ioannis. At the end of the road, we turn right onto a downhill path that takes us to a new junction, where we turn right onto the connecting path to the start of the Golna trail. On the connecting path, we turn right and soon meet the first part of the path under the chapel of the Holy Apostles. From there, turn left to soon reach the forest road that surrounds Litochoro and then turn right towards the chapel of Agia Paraskevi. From there, we follow Filippou Street and then descend towards the center, reaching the central square where we complete our circular route.

Prophet Elias - Golna - Deli - Prophet Elias

The hike starts from the parking lot of the chapel of Prophet Ilias. A path on the side of the mountain leads directly to the top of Golnas. We follow this path to its end. Then, we turn right towards the old monastery of Agios Dionysios. At an intersection, we turn left towards the top of Golna and then towards the forest site Tzuknida. At the new intersection, we turn right to reach the top of Golna. Then we follow southwest to the first pass and from there we turn left towards Deli. At the Deli forest site, continue left towards Agios Ioannis and then follow the path that ends at the parking lot of the chapel of Agios Ioannis. From there, turn left towards the settlement and then turn right onto the dirt road that leads to the chapel of Prophet Ilias. From there, we follow the path that leads to the Prophet Elias parking lot, thus ending the route.

Litochoro - Gkolna -Kastana - Litochoro

Starting from the center of Litochoro and following the main road towards the church of Agios Ioannis, we reach the area of Agia Paraskevi. From there, we follow the good path towards Aghios Apostolis and end up on asphalt, where we spot a large wooden gazebo. We follow the path that climbs parallel to the fence and soon we reach a cement road, where we find the entrance to the Faki estate. From there, the trail to Golna begins, climbing through a pine forest with a dense background of holly and other shrubs. Soon, we reach a stone bench and enjoy the view towards the Pieriki coast and Litochoro. We continue in similar scenery, albeit less uphill, until we reach the sloping meadow of Golna, where we find another gazebo and a fork. From there, we continue to the northwest on an almost horizontal path to the Enipea ravine. We follow the route passing through high vegetation of the mountain forest and going downhill. Shortly, we reach a junction with signs, where we choose the right section to approach the Kastana spring and then continue towards Litochoro via the E4 path.

Litochoro - Livadaki - Litochoro

Our route starts from the center of Litochoro, where the church of Agios Nikolaos is located. From there, we head towards the square, crossing 28is Oktovriou and Vasileos Konstantinou streets. Then, we pass by the chapel of Agia Paraskevi and continue towards the path that leads to the forest road. After crossing the path, we turn left and follow the dirt road that leads us to Agios Ioannis. Then, we turn left again on the asphalt road and continue towards Livadaki. At the beginning of the path to Livadaki, turn left and follow the path to the shelter. The return is made by following the same route to Agios Ioannis and turning left on the asphalt road to Litochoro. Then, we follow the path to the dirt road and return back to Litochoro, passing through the Deli and Tsouknida forest sites. Finally, we arrive back at the center of Litochoros, completing our trip to Olympus.

Litochoro - Hantolia - Gortia - Litochoro

The route starts from the Lakkos. After reaching the intersection with the metal footbridge, turn right and initially follow the path marked with yellow and green. Soon, however, we leave this path to cross the pasture located higher than the sports stadium of the settlement. Thus, we end up on another part of the path that is also marked with yellow and green, which leads us under the national forest guard, on the asphalt road to Prionia. After passing the guardhouse, we follow a section of the Karka path. At its first meeting with the Litochoro-Prionia road, we leave the path and turn left, moving along the road towards Prionia. Just before Zilnia, we leave the road and turn right on a rocky slope with a gentle slope. The new, shorter path takes us to a new crossing of the same road, up a sharp bend. There, the path continues on the other side of the road, quickly entering a dense coniferous forest. Finally, we reach the Stavros-Enipeas path, where we turn left in the direction of Enipeas. Soon we are at the forest site Hantolia, where we turn right onto the connecting path Hantolia-asphalt road to Prionia. After leaving the road, we go uphill, until we reach the forest site of Karyes. There we find and follow the old path to Prionia, which eventually leads us to Gortia. For the return, we follow the road until we meet the path to Enipeas, which we follow. Finally, we turn onto the Stavros-Enipeas path, which we meet in Hantolia, and descend from the path through Zilnia that quickly leads us to Litochoro. Finally, we cross the metal footbridge and immediately after turn left, entering the village.

Litochoro - Zilnia - Chantolia - Litochoro

We start our hike from the area of Lakkos, behind the parking lot of Litochoros. We follow a path to the metal bridge, passing through tall holly trees and sycamore trees. We walk next to a beautiful and charming river. There is a sign on the bridge and we follow the single path upwards. Soon we climb even higher. We continue uphill until we reach a characteristic clearing with a view towards the peaks, the position of Zilnia. Proceeding through a forest with pines and firs, we continue our journey upwards until we reach the position of Hantolia. There we follow the path to Prionia and we reach a wonderful clearing at Asprogies. Following the path to Prionia will lead us on a downhill course to Litochoro.

Routes to Prionia

Litochoro to Prionia via the Enipeas Gorge (E4)

The impressive Enipea gorge starts from Prionia and reaches Litochoro, also known as "Mills" or the other way around. The Enipeas River crosses the entire gorge, offering a unique experience to visitors. The entrance to the gorge is on the left just before the bar in Prionia. The gorge impresses with the many wooden bridges that cross the river and the small waterfalls that one encounters along the way. Near the monastery of Agios Dionysios is the twin waterfall and a cave worth exploring. The total length of the route from Prionia to Litochoro is approximately 12 kilometers. The route from Prionia to the cave is downhill, and then includes many ups and downs to Litochoro.

Routes to Refuges

Prionia - Refuge "Spilios Agapitos"

The route from Prionia, located at an altitude of 1100 meters, to the refuge "Spilios Agapitos" at 2100 meters, is the most popular hiking trail in Olympus, being the natural extension of the route from Litochoro to Prionia. The journey to Prionia is the end point for vehicles, being about 18 kilometers away from Litochoro. Here, the Enipeas River emerges from its sources, and there are year-round leisure and dining facilities, along with parking for cars. In addition, there are public toilets and water. The longer route goes through the forest, where the path remains well maintained. The dense vegetation of pines, combined with firs and beech trees, gives a special character to the landscape. About two-thirds of the way, you come out of the forest and the trail climbs up to the lodge with several twists and turns. From this point, you can admire the shelter hanging high on a rock ledge. This section can seem quite demanding as you are likely to be already tired and the sun exposure is strong. Therefore, it is important to be careful, as the sun at this altitude has strong radiation and there is a risk of sunburn. The shelter "Spilios Agapitos" is located on a natural balcony, surrounded by impressive centuries-old rocks.

Gortsia - Refuge "Giosos Apostolidis"

The route from Gortsia to the G. Apostolidis shelter follows one of the most popular paths of Olympus. Starting from the crossing of Gortsia, about 1100 meters altitude, the path crosses a forest of conifers and beech, with a slight incline but quite "steps" due to erosion by water and mules. Marking includes red markings on trees and rocks, while markings are dense up to the Petrostruga shelter and reliable up to Skurta peak. On the way, we meet the Petrostruga shelter, after about 2 hours and 30 minutes. We follow the path that leads to Skourta, climbing bare slopes to the top in about 1 hour and 30 minutes. From Skurta, we descend towards Laimos and then reach the Pass of Iossos, where the path widens for a safe crossing. At the Plateau, we take the right branch towards the shelter, getting there in about 20 minutes.

Prionia - Gomarostalos - Plateau of Muses

A quite demanding route with intense climbing and technical challenges is expected to be faced on this path. It starts from Prionia, where you will spot signs in the direction of Petrostruga. The route has steep slopes and areas with dense vegetation. During it, you have to be careful, as you move on loose ground and areas next to cliffs, although without direct danger. At the end of the route, you will encounter climbing sections that require climbing knowledge and caution due to their difficulty and backpack loading. The course presents changes in environments and demands, while water is limited, especially after the start. In conclusion, although interesting, it is very demanding and especially dangerous because of the final climbing section.

Gortsia - Refuge "Petrostrouga"

Start from the 14th kilometer of the road Litochoro - Prionia, in the location of Gortsia at an altitude of 1100 meters. From this point begins a wide path that leads to the plateau of the Muses. On departure, it is important to have enough water, as there are no springs along the route. The first important point is the "Barba" plateau. There are signs all along the route to guide hikers. The trail then climbs through a beautiful beech forest and reaches an opening with a concrete water tank at "Strago". You follow even and reach the Petrostruga shelter. Petrostruga shelter is located at 1950 meters altitude and can accommodate up to 80 people. It is open all year round and has an organized kitchen. You can enjoy your coffee and food, take a walk in the surrounding area and enjoy the amazing view towards Thermaikos Gulf, the Northern Sporades and Mount Athos. The refuge can be an intermediate station on the climb to the plateau of the Muses.

Gortsia - Skourta - Kakalos

The iconic route to the Plateau of the Muses starts from the paradise of the natural environment. The section from the parking area to the destination of Petrostruga consists of the dense forest landscape, where we ride under the cool shade of the trees. In this section we find the Barba and Koka Positions, ideal for a leisure and rest stop. After leaving Petrostruga behind us, the forest begins to thin out and the landscape takes on an alpine character. The ascent to the top of Skurta is the most difficult phase of the route and requires hikers to test their strength and endurance. However, the view offered by Laimos tis Skurta compensates for any effort, leaving us speechless in front of the vast landscape that stretches out before us, if the sky is blue enough. As we move forward, we come across the railings and, after them, the Yosos Pass, from where we enjoy the incredible view of the Plateau, with Stefani in the background haunting us with its majesty.

To Plateau of the Muses

Refuge "Sp. Agapitos" - Zonaria - Plateau of Mouson

The ascent from the Sp. Agapitos refuge to the Plateau of the Muses via the Zonarias, at least when there are no technical reasons to prevent it, such as snowdrifts in the Zonarias, is just as interesting and offers similarly impressive images as the Skurta and Laimos passes.

Routes to Mytika

Plateau of Mouson - Louki - Mytikas

The ascent of Mytikas from Luki is the epitome of mountaineering adventure in Greece: this impressive, if technically easy, climbing route, which runs through a vertical depression on the face of the steep slope and leads to the highest point of an entire place, remains, for a century after the first ascent, a pilgrimage for every climber.
