HOLY CHAPEL OF AGIOS KOSMAS OF ETOLOS

Agios Kosmas the Aetolos by the world Konstantinos Anifantis, one of the most beloved Orthodox saints, surprised with his devotion to faith and love for the world in the 18th century. His action deeply affected the lives of many, and especially Litochoro, a small village with deep religious roots.

Saint Kosmas of Aitolos was born in Megadendros of Aitoloakarnania (hereafter Aitolos) in 1714. From a young age, he showed a deep spiritual disposition and devotion to the Christian message. When he became a monk, he surprised with his simplicity and love, traveling throughout Greece to teach and comfort the world. Agios Kosmas the Aetolos, a spiritual guide and model of orthodoxy, started his spiritual journey from the Holy Monastery of Philotheou in 1758, dedicated to creating an inner life. Mount Athos was the "furnace" of his spiritual fire, where with vigils, prayers and study, he fought an internal struggle against himself. At the age of forty-five, in 1760, he was ordained a priest, but instead of focusing on increasing the monastery's income, he chose to promote spiritual progress and the salvation of souls. After being prompted, he left Mount Athos to fulfill his mission as a missionary to the subservient gentiles. His first tour brought him to Thrace, Macedonia, Thessaly and Aetoloakarnania. During his sermons, he abolished Sunday bazaars and brought harmony and tranquility to social life. His second tour was also about culture, during which he preached in regions of Epirus, Achaia and Cephalonia. Saint Kosmas, inspired by the love for God and the Greek people, founded 247 schools of "common letters" and 10 of "ancient dialect and sciences", seeking the spiritual and educational progress of the people.

Saint Cosmas' earthly end coincided with his effective action, as his opponents realized that to stop him they had to assassinate him. After being hanged they threw it into the river and for three days it was lost, at one point the Holy relic was floating in the river upright. With his death on August 24, 1779, Saint Kosmas left behind a complete work, a spiritual legacy and an example of love and loyalty to God and his fellow man.
